Conditions Treated with Laser Electrocautery

1. Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)

A tongue tie occurs when the tissue (lingual frenulum) under the tongue is too short or tight, restricting tongue movement.

Why it needs treatment:

  • In babies: Causes difficulty breastfeeding, poor latch, or slow weight gain
  • In children: May affect speech development, pronunciation, and eating
  • In adults: Can cause difficulty in oral hygiene, restricted tongue movement, and speech issues

Treatment:

  • A quick, safe laser frenectomy releases the tight tissue
  • Minimal discomfort and bleeding
  • Immediate improvement in tongue mobility

📸 Before: Restricted tongue movement, speech/latch difficulty

📸 After: Freer tongue movement, improved function

2. Mucocele (Mucous Cyst)

A mucocele is a soft, painless swelling inside the mouth (often on the lower lip) caused by a blocked salivary gland.

Why it needs treatment:

  • Can enlarge over time and interfere with eating or speaking
  • May burst but recur repeatedly if not properly treated

Treatment:

  • Laser excision removes the cyst and affected salivary gland
  • Fast healing with minimal scarring
  • Prevents recurrence

📸 Before: Bluish swelling on lower lip

📸 After: Clear, smooth tissue with no swelling

3. Frenectomy (Lip or Tongue Tie Release)

A frenectomy is the removal or reshaping of the frenum — the small fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the gums.

Why it needs treatment:

  • Lip tie: May cause spacing between teeth, gum recession, or difficulty brushing
  • Tongue tie: Can restrict movement (affecting speech, breastfeeding, or eating)
  • May contribute to orthodontic issues (gaps between teeth)

Treatment:

  • Laser frenectomy is quick, precise, and safe
  • Less bleeding, faster healing compared to scalpel surgery
  • Often performed in children before or during orthodontic treatment

📸 Before: Visible thick frenum causing gap between teeth

📸 After: Gap reduced, improved oral function
